It's time to intro myself as a Photographer!

Image
I've been shooting and editing for a few years now. Weddings, some corporate gigs, a few food style shoots and several music videos. It was time to get a business card together and put myself out to the community. San Diego is a great city with great weather and something for everyone. But the best part for photography and filming is the almost year round shooting ability. If you know where to go and when to be there, San Diego has world class shooting locations.

Hello San Diego!

Image
What a difference a year makes! We've had some big changes and we're excited to get back to work! We relocated HQ to beautiful San Diego, California last October and even though a pandemic has slowed the process, we are making new connections, new friends, enjoying the beach and letting the community know we're here to be of service just as much as we are in Atlanta.  San Diego has been kind and helpful and we feel blessed at the opportunity to share our talent and energy with this fine city.  And Atlanta will always feel like home.  As we recently mussed about my humble beginnings at the Center for Puppetry Arts as a puppeteer, to working my way up the film industry ladder from lowly art pa to become a successful commercial art director, to moving into directing and helping private and corporate clients tell their stories in meaningful and compelling ways. How BRP has grown in wonderful and unexpected ways since its creation in 2012?! I can't wait to see what's com...

Creative Support Continued - Are you getting what you need?

Image
Continuing from my last post… what exactly are The Field and The Domain? For a quick recap, Fields are the groups of people who inhabit Domains of knowledge. For example: I love the Domain of Painting and Art; and the Field of Painters and Artists. See the difference? A Domain is the Arena and the Field are the People that play in that Arena. So, who are these people in our fields of interest and what do we get from them?? Well, first we get Training. Once we find the mentors we need to take our visions to the next levels, we learn from them. Education keeps us moving forward, sharpening our minds and creative lives as we incorporate new skills. I'm grateful to have had parents that instilled a deep love of learning. Life is a long journey and the more you learn about what interests you creatively, the better your work will become. Everyday, my Fields of people teaches me something new. Resources are the next element our Fields provide. Resources in the form ...

Creative Support - Are you getting what you need?

Image
Are you creatively supported? Support comes in many forms, but without the proper help, an artistic endeavor or collaborative effort can wither and fade. So where does this "support" come from? Where should we be looking for that extra encouragement, aid or underwriting? It's people! Agents of change are PEOPLE! People! (In the voice of Charleston Heston from Soylent Green) Seriously, relationships are how the human world works. Creative support is about relationships.     Now, I know that you think the support you're looking for is monetary. If you only had the money, you'd be able to complete your creative project. I dig. But what happens when you're done? Are you going to share your art? Are you looking for any kind of artistic verification? At some point in the creative process, EVERYONE needs another person to provide a variety of supportive needs. And that person, or people, should be from your own creative Field.  ...

I've been talking with Creators about their Process, here's what they're saying.

Image
Hello fellow artists, readers and guests. Over the past several months I've been conducting interview and informal conversations with artists, creatives and people that seem to accomplish their short term creative goals with success. Let me tell you, the amount of feedback on the state of the modern artist is tremendous.      Putting aside the axiom of persistence getting us where we want to go, eventually, I asked fellow creators if they had any effective strategies for improving performance on longer-term creative projects? We all want to see our creative projects through to some level of completion and we want the highest quality available, affordable or capable. But not everyone gets their projects to the "finish line." What's the big secret? Why are some of us creating portfolios of work and others aren't?     From the horses mouth, simply put, just start . Yup, literally just 'Do it'. Get things going, over and over again. Start as early as pos...

Let's talk about BALANCE in a creative life.

Image
The life of a Creative person can be a tenuous balance. We make and create but also rest and relax. More experienced adventurers will understand the back and forth of creative energy. Sometimes we need to recharge that psychic juice. Give ourselves time to organize and reorganize our plan of action. How do you find balance? The working artist has a limited amount of time to spend acquiring new skills or knowledge not specific to their art. Anyone who’s ever created anything knows how much time, energy, money, emotion, thought, blood, sweat and even tears we invest in our work. Always hoping it will turn out better than expected and always relieved when it turns out at all. We could work just as hard at becoming more effectual, dynamic creators or communicators. What if there was a refresher course for working artists? What if there was a community of creative people that didn’t quite know how to connect? How does an introverted artist grow their network? The Creator’s W...

The beginning of The Creator's Workshop!

Image
As the 20's roar in I'd like to welcome my fellow artists, writers, musicians, and puppeteers to a WARRIOR ARTIST event. Over the past 20 years I’ve spent a lot of time talking and working with creative people. Advising, learning, bullshitting. The life of creators, when they’re not actually creating, seem to focus on a few things. How can I get my work out there? How can I make my work better? How can I meet the right people? When can I find time to make my art? How can I change the world? You too? Lately, these discussions have included friends and colleagues suggesting that it might be time to take my knowledge and perspective to a larger arena. I thought about it and decided they were right. So, I’m going to take my 20 plus years of experience as a working artist and my point of view on how to construct a fulfilling creative life, to a wider audience.  I’ll use a supportive environment to examine and explore how to make our creativity work for us. Do we make a...

Aslan the Lion and Mr. and Mrs. Beaver - Cruise ship show business!

Image
Team Awesome @ Zombie Cat Studios       So many good things and people came together on this one. With a healthy schedule of 5 weeks, Spencer Murrill, Cedwan Hooks and myself worked happily and diligently. Our team's combined years of experience and skills in puppet/mascot building, theatre/stage logistics and production made this build achievable within the budget and timeframe.       Employing long lasting, archival materials with the newest building processes and supplies made these puppets stage ready and user friendly. The beavers are light enough to move around stage easily and puppeteer for even small performers. Aslan the lion combines the body and head within a single performer, creating a striking and enduring stage personality.  Aslan's body has an aluminum frame, foam body and felt fur/skin. His mane was made from fake plastic ferns. His head weighs less than 10 lbs.  His body/legs are less than 20lbs.     ...

2015 - Catching up with the Captain - Building the Nautilus

Image
We made a "Making of" video. Enjoy.          Combined efforts into a large project can make light and quick of any work.  With Raymond Carr to lead the way, I and my team built this super light weight prop submarine for the GA Aquarium.  Trying to construct a set piece this big, that could be handled easily by the driver within, took some KISSing. Keeping it super simple. Simple design. Simple construction. Building on what we've proven with past projects and working with familiar and proven material.  This build was extra nice because we knew it would have a home at the Aquarium as soon as we finished building. It's always nice to know your "babies" are going to a good home, immediately.        A big thanks to Daniel and Josh Ford at the GA Aquarium.  And to Raymond at Ninja Puppet Productions, Rachel DeUrioste, Thomas Trinh and Jason Sokolic!

The Carbonaro Effect - From Props to Production Designer

Image
Who knew a small prop toy would lead to one of the most challenging projects yet?  After building a few magic props for Michael Carbonaro and his magic team, I was asked to take the helm of a new art dept. for the TV show.  After assembling a team of amazing artists, including Raymond Carr, Molly Coffee and Thomas Thrinn, we got to work on magical props and logistic challenges. With dozens of locations and multiple projects to juggle, the production was a unique experience.  Look for episodes on TrueTV.   This small bit from an episode was one of our silliest.   Big thanks to Michael and everyone at The Carbonaro Effect.
